N2  - Die Arbeit befasst sich mit Grundlagen und Rahmenbedingungen des Kunstmarkts und untersucht die Konkurrenz der Distributionssystem „Auktion“ versus „Handel". Nach einer Übersicht über die Geschichte des Kunsthandels werden die organisatorischen, ökonomischen und rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen des Marktes aufgezeigt. Der Mittelteil befasst sich mit den einzelnen Bereichen des Marktes sowie den Produkteigenschaften. Im Exkurs werden Einzelfragen wie Raubkunst oder Fälschungen behandelt. Die Distributionsformen werden anhand eines Marktdurchlaufes verglichen: Beschaffungs- und Absatzmarkt für Handel (Galeriehandel, Messen, Direktvermittlung) und Auktionen (Saalauktion, Internetauktion). Das letzte Kapitel schafft eine vergleichende Zusammenfassung, wagt einen Ausblick und beantwortet die Frage der These: Werden die Veränderungen der Rahmenbedingungen und Grundlagen des Kunstmarktes wie auch die Ausweitung der Geschäftstätigkeit von Auktionshäusern den Kunsthandel in die Nischen des Marktes abdrängen?
N2  - The thesis deals with the basic principles and the general framework of the art market, analyzing the competing distribution system "auction" versus "trade". Starting with an overview of the history of the “art world”, the thesis explores the logistic, economic and legal framework of the art market, followed by an analysis of different segments of the market as well as a description of the characteristic qualities of the "product". Specific issues such as looted art or fakes are discussed separately, while the various distribution forms available are compared on the basis of a market flow path, looking at the trade market for sourcing and selling art (art galleries, art fairs or direct sales) as opposed to auctions (auctions in a sale room, internet auctions). The last chapter provides a summary and answers the question that is at the basis of the thesis: Will the traditional art trade be relegated to the sidelines of the art market due to the changes in the basic principles and the general framework of the art market as well as the expansion of the activities by the auction houses?
