Audience Development mittels Besucher*innen.

  • Personal recommendations and Word-of-Mouth communication are central in the information-gathering and decision-making process for visiting a cultural institution. More and more publicly owned theaters in the German-speaking area want to make more effective use of this resource for their existing audiences. They are launching projects where enthusiastic and committed theatergoers are used to building desire, trust, and interest in theater in their own social environment. In view of a shrinking, aging, and predominantly homogeneous audiences of theaters, they hope to win previous non-visitors, break down structural barriers to access, and receive constructive feedback on the theater from participants. Johannes Maria Gerlitz investigates the extent to which theaters really use this audience development tool of the art ambassadors strategically in practice and whether they succeed in winning and retaining visitors. Using the evaluation method of the CIPP model, he shows the frame conditions, strategic approaches, implementation practices, and effects at four project-executing theaters that he accompanied in the 2020/21 season. In addition, he determines the necessary competencies of the art ambassadors as well as the conditions for the success of the communicative interaction between art ambassadors and the targeted new visitors.
